Negombo is one of the main city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, 40 km north of the capital, Colombo.and 10 km North to the Katunayake Bandaranayake international airport (BIA). Negombo has many churches. Majority of the population of Negombo are Christians and Catholics. With the previous, Portuguese Dutch and Colonies influence the town is also called “Little Rome” in Srilanka.
Negombo is the closest beach and tourist destination to Bandaranayake International Airport. Negombo public beach park area is one of the best sunsets on the west coast. Compare to the other towns in Srilanka Negombo has more active nightlife around Beach road.
Things to do
Fishing is the main industry in Negombo has the second largest fish Market in the Island. It is known to the locals as the “Lellama”. The fishermen have two options of either going out to sea fishing or fishing in the lagoon which is well known for its crabs, lobsters, and prawns. And drying fish on the next to the fish market also a very common scenery there any sunny time of the day.
Negombo Dutch fort
The Dutch Fort in Negombo is located between court and fish market in a walking distance. Initially the Fort was built by the Portuguese. But in 1672 it was captured by Dutch. Still remains land mark of small part of old monument.
Negombo Lagoon is by high biodiversity in its flora and fauna. The mangrove community in the lagoon is the most diverse of all mangrove communities in the west coast of Sri Lanka. Lagoon finishing is has more demand for the crabs, lobsters and prawns. Its nice and famous activity in the lagoon boat ride can see different species of fish,birds and amphibians.Share this tour
