Evolution of Tea industry in Srilanka
The tea is originated from china, then British is the reason behind spreading the all over the world.especially during the colonial era.
Formally during the portuguese and dutch period cinnamon was the crop that received government sponsorship.during dutch period the first governor Fedrick prohibited private cinnamon plantations to secure trade monopoly of east Indian company, however economic collapse in 1830 in England and Europe affected the Ceylon cinnamon plantation as well.
Then British turned to the coffee. Ceylonese also already had knowledge of coffee, but in it was also not succeeded due to fungus which effected coffee leafs.this led to the death of coffee industry.then planters experimented cocoa as alternative.that one also ended up in failure.
Eventually they turned to the tea. As experimentation first tea plants brought from china and planted in Peradeniya botanical garden.
further experimental plants brought from Calcutta, India. finally any tea plantations suited to the soil in that region. In 1867 James Taylor started tea plantation in Loolkandura estate (Near to Kandy).1872 fully operated tea factory was started.next year first shipment of Ceylon tea arrived in London which is 10 kilograms. Then tea plantations started to spread.
1932 ceylon tea propaganda board was formed and as a result of that 1965 SriLLanka became the largest tea producer in the world for the first time.
1995 srilanka was the largest exporter which shared 23% in the world market. Presently srilanka is 4th largest tea exporter in the world market. The reason behind high demand of Ceylon tea is because of hand plucking, without machines.which
effective on finest quality.so the puckers can pick and choose the ideal leaf. And in SriLankan it is legally prohibited to import tea. Otherwise there is a chance of importing poor quality tea from other countries and mixiup with Ceylon tea and exporting might result damaging the brand name and ended up in losing the business.
Presently there are over 1 million employees involving in this trade directly and indirectly.
Tea types and how tea process take place
Mainly we can divide tea according to elevation from the sea level
0-500 meters considered as low country tea, which has more aroma
500-1000 m are considered as mid country tea
1000 m above considered as upcountry tea which is the largest volume of Ceylon tea production.
But mainly tea is categorized after the process.
Neext broken orange pecko, (BOP) broken orange pecko fanning(BOPF), Ddust 1, Dust 2
No any artificial preservatives be added at any stage of the process. Green tea process is still same but not putting into the firing chamber, while silver tips and golden tips has special plant and factories.Share this tour
