Through the southern lowlands faces of central highlands. Uda Walawe developed as one of Sri Lanka’s most popular national parks. Mainly to see the large and easily spotted wild elephants. Udawalawa is the best place in the island to see the wild, in other range of fauna and habitats of Yala and Bundala. Localisation wise Udawalawa is situated beautifull part of the separation of south of the hill countr, while at its center the Uda Walawe Reservoir, catchment area it was originally established to protect. Uda Walawe lies in the dry zone, and its landscape is flat and open, with extensive areas of grassland and low scrub. The actual landscape of the park is rather monotonous during dry periods.
Elephants which there are usually around five hundred in the park are free to move along an elephant corridor between Udawalawa and Lunugamvehera National Parks, though most stay here. Also hundreds of buffaloes, macaque and monkeys,deer and crocodiles, and other rarely sighted residents include leopards, squirrels, jungle cats and sloth bears. Uda Walawe is also good or birds. including a number of endemics and some birds of , while the reservoir also attracts a wide range of aquatic birds.
Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home
About 5km away of the Udawalawa Nationalpark park entrance,Elephant Transit Home referred to as the “Elephant Orphanage”. started in 1995, the transits is home to around 30 baby elephants from the wild after the loss of their parents. As here are bottle fed milk until age of 3-5 years and a half, after which they’re given a diet of grass. At the age above 5 years, most are released into the national park as a result of they are familiour with wild life and to be survive by their own.
visitors worth to be there daily during about 30 minutes feeding sessions 9am, noon (12), 3 pm and 6 pm.
