Gangarama temple is the most attractive Buddist temple in Colombo, capital city of Sri Lanka which conducts the Nawam Perahera Festival. Nawam perahera will be one of a biggest pageant in Colombo. Every year month of February full moon night will be the colorful pageant, with many varieties of performers and elephants on city main Streets (since 1979).
Nawam perahera is symbolic of spiritual roots, together with demonstration of rich and diverse culture,captured by performers of the pageant.
Its a colorful collection and combination of traditional dancers and drummers represent the up country (Kandiyan), law country, Sabaragamu dancing cultures.
Elephants will be the most highlight part of this.
“NAWAM RAJA” the main Tusker elephant of the Gangarama temple carry the main relic casket. This will be the most dignify movement of the whole pageant
